Living with Chronic Heart Disease

heartThis is an educational program for outpatients living with Chronic Heart Disease. The four week series will consist of understanding heart diseases such as heart failure, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and others; nutrition for your heart; medica­tions for your heart; and physical activity and your heart. A question and answer period will occur the first Thursday of every month with HMC Cardiovascular Specialists Dr. Sheth or Dr. Sharma.  The series will be repeated monthly.

Start Dates: April 3rd, May 1st, June 5th, July 3rd, August 7th

Look Good, Feel Better

In conjunction with the American Cancer Society, Holyoke Medical Center will present a beauty lesson, with a cosmetologist, free make-up kit (value of $250) and a great time, during a very special program designed to help cancer patients. “Look Good, Feel Better” is an American Cancer Society program for women who are in treatment for cancer and may be experiencing hair loss and skin changes. Find out more about wig care, styling and tips on how to utilize scarves and turbans at the program. The group will be small and intimate – limited to 8 women in treatment.

Diabetes Self Management

diabetesPeople with diabetes are invited to attend this program on diabetes self-management. The program offers a team approach to helping participants make better judgments about their care and to promote independence. Sessions will focus on what diabetes is, medication, diet, and the role exercise plays.

Ready to Quit Smoking?

no smokingSpring is a great time to quit! Our READY, SET, QUIT! Smoking Cessation Workshop is made up of six classes designed to give you the information and support you need to get through one of most important changes of your life. Each week the workshop will cover topics such as:

  • Setting and sticking to a quit date.
  • Learning more about your triggers to smoke and how to avoid them.
  • How to keep motivated & remain smoke free.
  • Developing coping skills to manage the mental and physical feelings associated with quitting.

Free Hearing Screening

A hearing screening is a quick way to have your hearing checked. Those who pass a hearing screening are presumed to have no hearing loss. Those who fail are in need of a more detailed hearing evaluation to determine the nature and degree of the hearing loss and the best treatment options. The hearing screening will also include an inspection of the ear canal to see if excessive wax is present, which may require a referral to an M.D. Space is limited, please call to register.

Join George Abbott, PhD of our Outpatient Behavioral Health Service as he explores how to identify and eliminate stress in our daily lives. This presentation will include Dr. Abbott demonstrating different types of meditative and relaxation techniques to help participants better cope with stress.

MOLST: Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment

MOLST is a way to make your own choices about your end of life medical care for persons of any age with a life threatening medical condition, illness or injury. This is different than a healthcare proxy, advanced care plan or living will. It allows you to legally document what you want at the end of your life if you are ill. A MOLST is written instructions from a physician to other health care providers. Join Cherelyn as she describes MOLST further and provides forms for you to discuss and share with your medical providers.

Family & Friends CPR

The Family & Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult Hands-Only® CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult and child AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use, infant CPR and relief of choking in an adult, child or infant. Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment by using the American Heart Association's research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible. Family & Friends CPR is for people who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card in CPR for their job. This course is ideal for schools and students, new parents, grandparents, baby sitters and others interested in learning how to save a life. Space is limited. Please call to register (413) 534-2789.

Stroke Support Group -
Open to all stroke patients and their families and care givers. A speech-language pathologist will conduct a focused language/memory/therapeutic activity for part of each session; however, the primary goal is socialization and an opportunity for patients and families to share experiences and ideas.
