Living with Chronic Heart Disease

heartThis is an educational program for people living with chronic heart disease. The four week series will consist of understanding heart diseases such as heart failure, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and others; nutrition for your heart; medications for your heart; and physical activity and your heart. A question and answer period will occur the first Thursday of every month with an HMC Cardiovascular Specialist. The series will be repeated monthly.

Start Dates: February 5, March 5, April 2 
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Prepared Childbirth Class

Classes will include discussions on: relaxation and breathing techniques; the birth process; how the baby develops; nutrition; environmental hazards in pregnancy; staying comfortable during pregnancy; newborn care; basics of breastfeeding and postpartum adjustment.

Breastfeeding Class

The Birthing Center at Holyoke Medical Center offers a monthly breastfeeding class from 7 to 9pm in the Parent Education Room. Upcoming dates can be obtained by calling the Center. Pre-registration is necessary as seating is limited. Mothers’ partners are encouraged to attend, as both partners have a role in the breastfeeding adjustment. Topics will include whether to implement a schedule, and how to deal with various issues that might arise.

Survivorship: Life After Cancer

Dr. Zubeena Mateen HMC Medical Director of Oncology
To support cancer survivors through the next phase of their journey – life after treatment – Holyoke Medical Center will offer a free monthly educational series open to all cancer survivors. On Feb. 18, 2015 Dr. Mateen will introduce the series, focusing on the importance of embracing life after cancer and how to advance along this new journey.

WALK WITH A DOC is a one-hour event allowing participants to learn about a specific health topic, briefly presented by a Holyoke Medical Center doctor. Participants then walk together with the doctor for approximately 30–45 minutes. The doctor will provide time for a question and answer period. Participants will be able to have their blood pressure checked at the end of the event. Pedometers and water will be provided to all pre-registered participants.

Diabetes Self-Management

People with diabetes are invited to attend this program on diabetes self-management. The program offers a team approach to helping participants make better judgments about their care and to promote independence. Sessions will focus on what diabetes is, medication, diet, and the role exercise plays.

Quit Smoking Workshop

Our READY, SET, QUIT! Smoking Cessation Workshop is made up of six classes designed to give you the information and support you need to get through one of the most important changes of your life. Attendees will be able to remain in the program for support after the six-week course is completed. Each week the workshop will cover topics such as: Setting and sticking to a quit date; Learning more about your triggers and how to avoid them; How to keep motivated & remain smoke free; Developing coping skills to manage the mental and physical feelings associated with quitting

Free Hearing Screening

HMC Speech & Hearing Department
A hearing screening is a quick way to have your hearing checked. Those who pass a hearing screening are presumed to have no hearing loss. Those who fail are in need of a more detailed hearing evaluation to determine the nature and degree of the hearing loss and the best treatment options. The hearing screening will also include an inspection of the ear canal to see if excessive wax is present, which may require a referral to an M.D.

Look Good, Feel Better

In conjunction with the American Cancer Society, Holyoke Medical Center will present a beauty lesson, with a cosmetologist, free make-up kit and a great time, during a very special program designed to help cancer patients. “Look Good, Feel Better” is an American Cancer Society program for women who are in treatment for cancer and may be experiencing hair loss and skin changes. Find out more about wig care, styling and tips on how to utilize scarves and turbans at the program. The group will be small and intimate – limited to eight women in treatment.

Open to all stroke patients and their families and care givers. A speech-language pathologist will conduct a focused language/memory/therapeutic activity for part of each session; however, the primary goal is socialization and an opportunity for patients and families to share experiences and ideas.
