Holyoke Medical Center Offers MRI with Anesthesia
In its continued effort to improve the patient experience, Holyoke Medical Center (HMC) now offers MRI with general anesthesia, eliminating patient anxiety while also improving the quality of MRI scans for these patients.
With a referral from a child's pediatrician or adult primary care physician, MRI with anesthesia can be a safe and effective option for quickly obtaining the needed high quality images. Anesthesia not only improves the patient's MRI experience, but provides a better, more accurate scan, and can be quicker, since the patient is completely still while under the anesthesia.
"We were receiving many requests from patients and community physicians to offer MRI with anesthesia," said HMC Chief of Anesthesiology Dr. Vijay Gandevia. "We are pleased to be able to meet the needs of our patient population right here at Holyoke Medical Center, for children as well as adults."
On the day of the appointment, patients register in Short Stay Surgery and are escorted downstairs to the MRI suite where they receive anesthesia and their scan. Patients wake up from anesthesia in the MRI Department, and recover in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. They are fully monitored and are under the care of an attending anesthesiologist and post-anesthesia nurse at all times.
