Ask a Doc: I am pregnant and in very good health. Can I donate blood?
Our answer comes from Dr. Gretchen Loebel of Western Mass OB/GYN.
Question: I am pregnant and in very good health. Can I donate blood?
Answer: Being pregnant or within six weeks of having been pregnant make you ineligible for donating blood. Although you are in good health and feel fine, your body is experiencing significant changes and needs all of the nutrients and oxygen that your blood is carrying throughout your body. It is for your own safety and that of your baby that you do not donate during this time. You can donate blood while breastfeeding, if you so choose.
