Holyoke Medical Center Nationally Recognized with an ‘A’ For the Spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Apr 29, 2021

Holyoke Medical Center has once again achieved an ‘A’ grade in the spring Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Holyoke Medical Center’s achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. Holyoke Medical Center was also named a Top General Hospital by The Leapfrog Group in December, a recognition awarded to only 29 hospitals nationally.

“The recognition Holyoke Medical Center continues to receive from The Leapfrog Group acknowledges the hard work of our physicians, nurses and each and every member of our staff for their commitment to safety and patient centered care,” says Spiros Hatiras, President and Chief Executive Officer of Holyoke Medical Center and Valley Health Systems, Inc.  “Despite the many challenges presented over the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic, providing compassionate, high quality care to our community continues to be our top priority.”

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care.

“It’s clear Holyoke Medical Center is on a never-ending quest to keep patients safe through thick and thin,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This likely saved many lives through the pandemic and prepared for future health emergencies. I thank Holyoke Medical Center for leadership and inspiration in these trying times.”

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

Holyoke Medical Center was awarded an “A” grade today when Leapfrog updated grades for spring 2021. To see more details on Holyoke Medical Center’s performance and to access consumer-friendly tips for patients, visit hospitalsafetygrade.org.
