NURSES - Healthy Work Environment
Holyoke Medical Center knows what it takes to keep nurses happy. That’s why we’re dedicated to implementing the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments. We’re rolling out the six standards across all our nursing units — because we know that a healthier work environment means happier nurses.
Healthy Work Environment Standards
- Skilled Communication
- True Collaboration
- Effective Decision Making
- Appropriate Staffing
- Meaningful Recognition
- Authentic Leadership
What that means at HMC:
Our team helps to determine how each pillar is implemented on the nursing units. Through a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team approach, this evidence-based framework is used to build improvements throughout Holyoke Medical Center. Some of the ways that has already occurred include:
Skilled Communication
At HMC we invite and hear all perspectives from patients, families, and the healthcare team. We know that respect is a key factor in successful communication and we have a zero-tolerance policy for disrespectful behavior throughout the organization.
True Collaboration
Each team member is valued and respected at HMC. By working together, with transparency, we are able to provide the best care to our patients. We pride ourselves on maintaining strong collaboration between nurses, physicians, support staff, and administration to make HMC the best place to work.
Effective Decision Making
Our nursing team is empowered to participate in opportunities that influence decisions and policies affecting the quality of patient care. This is achieved with participation in Nursing Peer Review, Clinical Practice Councils, Multidisciplinary Rounds, End of Life committee, and the Healthcare Ethics committee, just to name a few.
Appropriate Staffing
HMC is committed to providing fair nurse-to-patient ratios, while also maintaining the highest support-staff ratios in the Pioneer Valley. We have also made a significant investment in having specialty-trained nurse educators available on both DAY & NIGHT shift for all areas.
Meaningful Recognition
We pride ourselves in finding ways throughout the year to create meaningful moments of recognition. From spoken words of praise and handwritten thank you notes to clinical ladder celebrations and formal awards programs – we take the time to recognize the small and large moments our nursing team achieves. Recognition includes kudos in unit newsletters, a Unit Star of the Month, ACE of Hearts Employee of the Month, the Annual ACE Awards, Nurse of Distinction, and the DAISY Award!
Authentic Leadership
Our leadership is present and visible among every unit of the hospital. You will see your nursing directors & senior leadership team on the unit and have opportunities to build relationships with them. We welcome open, honest communication on what is working, what is not, and how improvements can be made.
