Memory Disorders

Memory Disorders

It is normal to have some memory problems, especially as we get older. But for millions of people, it is much more severe. Memory loss may come and go, or get progressively worse. A person with a memory disorder may forget the names of close family and friends, become unable to perform simple tasks or get lost in their own neighborhood.

Types of memory disorders include:

  • Dementia
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
  • Vascular cognitive impairment
  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)

HMC Neurology and Sleep offers a full evaluation for the proper diagnosis and treatment of memory disorders. Diagnosis involves taking a complete history and possibly tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans. Treatment depends on the type and severity of memory disorder, but may involve medication and lifestyle changes (diet and exercise).
